Visit to the Scottish Government Headquarters

Our society members were given the opportunity to visit the Scottish Government Headquarters in Edinburgh to enjoy, experience and learn what it takes to be a Scottish Government Lawyer.

The visit to the Legal Directorate of the Scottish Government was highly informative, engaging and fun. Our students were given insight of ongoing legal topics such as Redress for Survivors (Historical Child Abuse in Care) (Scotland) Bill, the UNHRC bill which was recently challenged in the Supreme Court and learnt about the proposed (Scottish) Human Rights Bill which the Scottish Government had thoroughly worked on and developed. They were also given an extensive tour of the Headquarters and had the opportunity to listen to influential key speakers in the Government and ask questions.

They also had the opportunity to look at (and hold!) the very First Edition of the Scots Acts whilst on their tour of the enormous headquarters.

Feedback from students who attended:

“The visit was enjoyable and the staff present made us feel very comfortable and were happy to answer any questions that we had!”

“The day was really informative and it was amazing that the lawyers took time out of their day to speak to us. The day undoubtedly sparked my interest in a career in public law. Hearing that the government lawyers had such different career paths yet their varied experiences were useful to a role in the Government was very reassuring to me as a 2022 LLB graduate!

It was organised really well and I was so glad I went".”

The Visit to the Legal Directorate of the Scottish Government was highly enriching. There was a very welcoming and personable atmosphere which enabled a true insight into the lives of the Government lawyers and how they made their way to the position they are in now. We were also given insight into very topical legal issues which the Directorate were focusing on such as The Redress Bill, the UNHRC bill and the (Scottish) Human Rights Bill. in all the topics we could address our questions directly to the lawyers involved in these issues and discuss selected aspects with them.

I would like to thank the UoA Law Society who enable this opportunity which was highly valuable to all participants.
